Narrative-Led Strategic Marketing Leadership for Growing Organizations

Logan Square monument in Chicago

How Clear Communication Drives Growth: Lessons from 13 Years of LoganSquarist

It’s no secret that I love Logan Square. Not only do I call this vibrant Chicago neighborhood my home, but I have dedicated much of my free time to researching, writing and sharing stories about the community.

I ran LoganSquarist for 13 years—a hyperlocal news platform featuring articles, a business directory, an events calendar and a community forum tailored specifically to this thriving neighborhood.

Through managing this platform over the past few years, I’ve learned crucial marketing lessons—particularly how targeted messaging boosts brand awareness and clear, direct communications drive meaningful business outcomes.

The Value of Clear, Targeted Messaging

Clear messaging doesn’t just streamline your brand; it ensures you find exactly the resources and support you need.

Lessons from Leading a Volunteer Organization

Running LoganSquarist as a volunteer-driven organization taught me the importance of clearly defined roles and expectations. Initially, our doors were wide open—welcoming anyone eager to contribute. Volunteers joined with diverse backgrounds, often stepping into unfamiliar roles and quickly learning new skills. This approach, while exciting and educational, wasn’t always efficient.

As we grew, clarity became critical. As we matured, our volunteer page listed specific open positions, complete with detailed role descriptions and required qualifications. Adopting a more structured recruiting approach improved the quality of our volunteers and significantly streamlined our operations.

Why Clear Communication Matters

Clear communication shapes expectations, which is essential in every relationship—be it hiring volunteers, working with clients or engaging customers. Clearly defining your needs and objectives makes finding quality candidates, partners, or customers significantly easier.

Too often, brands undermine their own potential with vague, indirect messaging. Whether you’re hiring, selling a product, or offering services, unclear communication frustrates potential customers and strategic partners, weakening your overall brand presence.

Instead of being overly creative or cryptic, prioritize clarity and precision. Clearly articulate your purpose, what you offer and how you add value.

Be clear. Be concise. Tell your story.

Watch as genuine connections and opportunities emerge.
