Guys and Dolls (1955)—Not on the AFI 100 or AFI 400, this movie is considered a musical classic to many. It’s been on my “to watch” list for some time. I really enjoyed the Marlon Brando/Jean Simmons romance the best. The dialog seemed forced though. No contractions were used throughout most of the movie and each time I noticed. Seems like a weird hang up but for some reason that stuck out to me. It also was kind of strange hearing Marlon Brando sing the now well-known Frank Sinatra Hit, “Luck Be A Lady.” Brando’s voice is obviously not as good as Sinatra’s.
Easy Rider (1969)—This was my first Peter Fonda film and the first AFI 100 film of the day. A movie about motorcycle riders and drugs, this film followed the lifestyle of hippies and the 60s. I liked this film except for the trippy, drug parts because of the film cuts and scene flashes. That sort of camera technique just seems to bother me a lot. The ending also was sad (although I won’t give it away in case someone hasn’t seen it).
Sunrise (1927)—My first silent film! There a few silent films on the AFI 100, including The Jazz Singer and City Lights. This one is a love story of a farmer and his wife, and how they’re nearly torn apart by … dun, dun, dun … a woman from the city. Even though it’s a silent film, the story is strong and rings true, even to 21st century standards. It was probably my favorite movie of the day.
Unforgiven (1992)—Don’t mess with Clint Eastwood! Or his friends. A classic western film, this tale follows a broken man try to support his family. Battling his demons, he is pushed to the edge, yet tries to remain true to his wife. As I’ve mentioned before, westerns aren’t really my thing but this film was very well put together and also stars Morgan Freeman. You can’t beat that combo.
