I watched The General tonight. Boy are these silent films hard to focus on. This one actually was somewhat funny. It starred Buster Keaton who had a great way of conveying humor with a straight face.
The movie is about the civil war and love. The main character is a clumsy train engineer who continues to get himself into predicaments and acts baffled most of the time. When the war breaks out, the army refuses to enlist him, he’s shamed by his true love for not being brave enough and goes on to save the day through shear dumb luck and happenstance. It’s all very light and set to the backdrop of some pretty famous classical pieces.
Again not my favorite on the AFI but I can certainly appreciate the film for what it did for movies. Buster Keaton also was a delight to watch.
This is my 86th AFI film. I only have 14 more to go.
