I turned 25 this year; quarter of a century. A lot of friends also turned 25 and lamented over “being old.” I don’t know when being in your mid-20s qualified as old. I don’t feel old. I still feel like the confused teenage, the misunderstood preteen, the lonely only child playing by herself, the toddler demanding for attention. Each year, I don’t look at how old I am. My birthday doesn’t mark that sort of progression for me like it does for others. Instead, birthdays have always been a celebration. Sort of selfish, sure, as I am an only child with divorced parents so I tend to get quite a number of gifts from each parent and various tokens from step-second families. But also a time for me to remember how I’ve gotten where I am today. All that I’ve experienced and celebrate that with friends. This year I had a quite a bash with friends out on the town and much hilarity occurring.
In the gift department, my Amazon.com wishlist turned out to be the greatest tool ever. I got a wonderful array of delectable gifts including the following:
Sunbeam Electric Throw – I am one cold-blooded kid as no matter what, I need a coat or a blanket. After last year’s greatest. christmas. gift. ever. (aka, the electric blanket) made staying warm a breeze, I decided I needed a throw for those lounging around on the couch days. It’s about the best thing ever. And Ethan likes it too.
Grey’s Anatomy, Season 2 – Who doesn’t like Grey’s Anatomy? Well, if you don’t, or you’re unfamiliar, you are missing out. Fantastic show, includes Doctor McDreamy and the music is great. Seriously, check out the music guide on the site because it is amazing! Mike Doughty, Tegan and Sara, Sia, etc. Awesome.
Oneida Bake and Take 24-Cupcake Carrying Case – Can I just say: I LOVE TO BAKE CUPCAKES! Okay, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I got this great fantastic cupcake carrying case (has anyone tried to figure out ingenius ways of getting these little suckers around?). I have used a variety of methods usually resulting in lopsided sticky cakes that have lost their luster.
One Skein – Cool concept book that has patterns that only require one skein (or one ball for non-yarnaholics) to make a project. What a fantastic idea since I tend to buy yarn because it’s pretty, not because I actually have something in mind for it; a problem I am trying to rectify. Actually making a cable/rib combination scarf I found in it as a Christmas present. Will post pictures soon.
stitch-it kit – I just got this book this past weekend. I am very excited about this. Not that I need another craft but I have always liked cross-stitch but didn’t like the patterns. Alas, here comes Jenny Hart’s Sublime Stitching and a fantastic new approach to this wonderful needlecraft. Oh the wonderful stitching joys to come!
Sew U – From Built by Wendy‘s founder Wendy Mullin, learn how to reconstruct your own wardrobe to create unique, interesting pieces. Sewing is one of those things I know minimally about. I know how to press the pedal and stitch a hem. But understanding patterns and really doing something with fabric has always been hit or miss for me. So here is my hopeful wish to learn a little more.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation DVD – A family tradition in my household is watching this movie on Thanksgiving (the official holiday where we admit that we are listening to Christmas music already). I still laugh when Clark drives under the semitruck, when the Christmas lights just don’t cooperate, the turkey is overcooked and the inlaws are in town. Nothing makes me laugh harder when Julia Louis-Dryfus is not only mauled by a mischevious and crazy squirrel but by a crazed hound. Get it, watch it, love it.
Sarah McLachlan, Wintersong – A surprise gift, but a hit. I don’t often get CDs and forgot that this must have been on my list at one point, but I love Sarah. Plus there’s a great cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River” on here that is a must. What a wonderful song. Although when is Sarah coming out with some more original, I ask you?
Tony Bennett, Duets: An American Classic – Another surprise, but already a favorite of my mom. I love the songs, especially the duet with Michael Buble. Tony is awesome and who wouldn’t want a CD. Good times!
Well there you have this year’s birthday summary. I believe a few more gifts are coming so I’ll have to make sure to update my list.
Be inspired.
One of the best things I've ever done in my career is work with Kate Hamilton. Her enthusiasm for all things editorial, not to mention her energy and passion for any project she's involved with, is contagious. In addition to being a natural born leader, she's also a creative type, a thinker, a stickler for details, and someone with incredible vision and the drive to get things done. I always marvel at how she is constantly teaching herself new things. She always seems to be ahead of the curve on anything related to social media, and she also has an eye for design. This lady rocks! And she continues to be a mentor to me and others in journalism and communications.
I met Kate through the Association of Women Journalists (AWJ) and immediately was impressed (and inspired) by her creativity, drive, work ethic and use of social media. Her passion for journalism, digital media and communications overall is evident in the projects she takes on, including LoganSquarist, an online news outlet that she founded that uses social media to socialize the neighborhood. What I admire about Kate is her vitality as well as her desire to keep learning and growing personally and professionally. Kate is a modern-day renaissance woman who is multitalented (ask about her travel, knitting and marathon exploits!) and who brings instant value to any team or organization.
Kate has been a fantastic resource for all things digital, whether redesigning my website on Wordpress, fine tuning my social media profiles, or understanding Google Analytics. She's an excellent communicator, and I will absolutely hire her again in the future.
I worked with Kate during my time as a community manager at Lightspan Digital while Kate was my direct manager. Kate’s communication practices really taught me how to navigate the sometimes complicated agency world. As an account manger, Kate smoothly orchestrated 10+ accounts at one time as well as help me manage and prioritize tasks in my role. Kate was a role model during my first few years in the professional world and continues to be so to this day.
Kate did and excellent job with our website. We have received several compliments on how nice it looks and how easy it is to navigate. She also went above and beyond to make sure that we were able to update and the website ourselves through Wordpress. I cannot gush about how awesome she is and how happy we are with the site and her dedication to the project.
Kate has an incredible amount of drive when it comes to LoganSquarist. In the six months that I’ve been involved, I’ve watched the site grow from a pet project to a respected community publication. This success can be attributed to Kate’s technical and leadership skills. From building out the site to off-hours community management and a consistent flow of content, the site improves by leaps and bounds on a weekly basis. When it comes to team management, Kate delegates tasks in an organized and efficient manner, making her an all around great and inspiring person to work with.
Kate is a real professional and a pleasure to work with. She is a great communicator and always put her client's (my company) interest first. She is tremendously personal and had a great understanding of our business and how she could help it. She is great and is a tremendous asset to any company.
Kate is a wealth of knowledge who served as a tremendous mentor for all of our team members while constantly improving processes and workflows. She’s a tremendous project manager, pays great attention to detail, and is able to demand results from her team with respect. At LoganSquarist she has built and led a team of dozens of volunteer contributors committed to her vision of a community resource. I would happily work with Kate again anytime!
